after waiting so long I was clearly not that excited. It's not really harry potter. It was okay but nothing special. the notes from J. K. Rowling were a little weird.
Great Characters, fast plot, great pacing. The plot is a little predictable. For a dystopia it really did not address how or why this dystopia might fall apart. Clearly this is book one and this still has a chance to correct that. Love how it ends on a down note. Probably only possible with the knowledge there will be a second book of who knows how many.
so amazing. the best part about seeing the movie first is you get to love the movie and then love the book as opposed to love the book and be disappointed by the movie. In this case I love both... but in the end probably for different reasons. The world is a different place now.
Wow this book does read fast. Brain is an interesting artist. He's illustrations are weakest in wide shot scenes but any close up picture is very full of emotion. Every image is a mastery of value control with even really dark scenes having rich detail.
The story was nice though I didn't really have time to fall in love with the characters. A great experiment.
I have 2 issues with these books. Part of my problem with these books is that both Mogget and the Disreputable Dog are basically deus ex machina. God like characters that explain nothing, know everything and fix all problems and because of that all agency is taken away from the main characters. YA books should be about giving agency to teens and Garth Nix just refuses to do that.
I'm not sure why I could not get through this book. I've been tired and sleeping on the bus but I don't think that is the only reason. Overall it just didn't seem to hold my interest... but I still would have liked to finish it.
